Hi all,

I'm thinking of starting work on the newest version of GKN (version 3.0). I'd be interested in hearing ideas for interactions and such.

I will be keeping most of the tools in the site the way they are currently but I'd like to change a few things. I think this forum might come down and I might build a new one that is not so prone to robot spam attacks (don't worry you will not have to sign up again). I was also trying to think of ways that members could be more interactive. Maybe I'll include some of the interactivity of dangpony into GKN. Does the idea of GKN profiles sound interesting?

Here are a few other ideas:
1) Maybe create a "build your own lesson" section? The interface may be bothersome to build.

2) Make it so that people can write reviews and comments on the reviews?

3)What about a way to make comments under each of the tools? This way people could ask questions and get answers right under the tool they are using.

As you can tell there is still no firm plan. Any ideas?

I'm also thinking of making all GKN content available only to GKN members. Or at least having added content in a members only section. An example of this is the GKN tab archive. I could add a lot of content that I have not yet added to this section. What do you guys think of this idea and do you have any other suggestions to improve the site? Basically everything is on the table right now so let me know what you think.

thanks,
Mike

Personally, the combination of 1,2 and 3 would be a moderators nightmare. I like all the ideas but #3, I like the most.

Another thing you might think about adding is allowing video to be embeded directly to a post. We have that over on that High School sports forum I was working on. KICK ASS FEATURE, specially for aspiring video artist!

Yeah I would have to make a moderator area to see everything new at once. This could make managing the user content pretty easy.

Embedding video is a great idea I'll allow this content once its all figured out. If I could find the right host I would even allow video uploads with automatic video conversion like what YouTube offers. This is the one this that DP can't do that I wish it could. (The hosting server has to have a php library added and my current host does not do this.)

I like this idea. At least I think that I do. Could you expand on this idea? I can't come up with anything else right now but I'll think about it.

Yeah I want the user lessons to be one of the biggest new features. I'd love to find some way of making the lesson creation process easier. Maybe I'll see if I can create a tab builder or a chord/scale diagram builder that will allow user to drop in the scale form or chord form by selecting the chord/scale.

The term "KnowledgeNet" means a large collection of information and I'd like to make GKN better meet fit that definition. I have about 200 pages that I think will be released with the new version of GKN but thats still not enough to do what I really envisioned. If I will ever get there I will need others putting in lessons too.

I'll also want to make it so youtube vids will be embedable into the lessons.

I'm excited for you and the new ideas. Your site is already tight as it is now but this new stuff is gonna make it even better. Sounds cool.

Hi,

This is just to give you all a quick update on the new site design and to let you know I am actually working on it.

I have started on GKN version 4. In fact I have really made progress with some of the new tools and design elements. I'm almost done with one of the new main tools already. (can't post what tools I'm working on but its pretty sweeeeet and "bothersome to build" <--- hint ).

This update will mark a whole new direction for gkn. While I will be keeping the tools gkn is used for most I also want to incorporate more of a guitar community knowledge base. I'm going to use some of the ideas of dangpony.com and bring them into gkn. GKN will not be not as socially based as dp as there will be more focus on musicians. But a lot of the idea and tools will be available in GKN too. I'm kinda hoping to turn gkn into a music/guitar knowledge depot.

One specific change I can talk about is the new media player I created that will allow users to create a jukeboxs of their music that can be inserted into their profile or into any of their lessons. This is done already but its lacking the backend to function inside the site yet.

I have a good grasp on the things that I need to do but its a really really big job so it will not be done for a few months at the soonest.

I will also be getting rid of this board but will build a forum to replace it. This change should reduce the spam and porn posts by 90% plus I also have a few more tricks to bring that down even more. Very happy . Since I don't want to lose the info from this board I will most like create a way that this board can be viewed but not posted to in an archive of some type.

No one should be asked to sign-up for the site again but members may get an email saying they have to change your password when the new system goes live.

As we get closer to the release date I'll let you all know more.

P.S. In the 3 1/2 years gkn has been around there have been almost 200,000 people that have been to the site so I have to think I've helped at least a couple of thousand of them. If this new section is done right and we get people posting lessons on a regular basis it could help literally hundreds of thousands of kids around the world learn their instruments better. This has been my goal for gkn from the beginning so I hope the idea takes off.

Nice. I personally think that you've always done a good job of sharing and displaying information on your site. I liked GKN the first time that I saw it (whatever version that was back then). I'm sure these new ideas are gonna be just as tight.

Just a quick update.

I'm still working... Its going slow and I've been side tracked a few times. but I've started building the database and some of the tools are just about done. The new look is kinda set but I'm still tweaking it to get it right. The member/lesson Media Player is complete and can take backend commands. (Can't wait it will be sweet). I've completed the site layout but just on paper... This is a BIG job but if I do just a little every day it could be done pretty soon.

I've also be formatting the new content. I was planning on releasing it all at once but now I'm thinking that I will enter all of it through a DB and have my program release a new lesson every 3-5 days. (Still not sure about how long between lessons just yet.)

I'm thinking of recreating some of the standard gkn tools so they will be able to be intergraded the new tools but I'm not sure if I want to open that whole can of worms. I would be able to re-create these pretty quick but with so many other things to do I might not get around to this just yet.

I'm thinking about creating the whole forum and member section completely in flash. This could be really cool looking and could stop spam bots and things like that which is good but it would also be unreadable by google and other search engines which is bad. I might just make it so that any time you are posting it will be done in flash but when you are reading are browsing it will be done in html.

Anyway I'll keep plugging away at this. You guys should start thinking of interesting things to write lessons on. I think this could be really cool and could help a LOT of people but a lot of it will depend on you guys and gals out there.

I think this post should be in GKN news but who reads that? Thanks for reading this if you have any ideas please let me know.

Still Working....

I've gotten a LOT done. The new tools work really well as far as I can tell so far (still needs more testing).

This new "system" ties together a bunch of tools and allows all these tools to be used together to create a really cool learning/teaching environment.

I've started a new fretboard tool but that may not be done before the rest of the site is rolled out. If not I'll release it after the rest of the site... No big deal. I'm not really sure of all the functionality I'm going to give this thing so its pretty far off. If you have an idea for a fretboard diagram tool now would be the time to tell me.

Those of you that signed up for DangPony! might recognize some aspects of the new GKN system as I am using the same idea for the calender, message, and media sections of the new site.

I'll be contacting a few of you to come and beta test some of the new tools if you feel like it.

I've not yet figured out how everything will fit together or even all the options that are going to be available to both members and non-members. There is also the matter of old gkn material and what will be done with that. So as you can see there is still a lot left to be decided. I think mid February to early March is the release date I'm shooting for.

I have to tell you I think some of these tools are great and will be a lot of fun to use. I can wait to release it.

Too cool, can't wait!

I'm gonna use the new setup as a "Jumping on" point. I've all but quit playing now for about 6 months and am starting to look for an excuse to get back to playing/training. Sounds like this could be just what the doctor ordered!

Laughing Yeap, just shy of 6 months! I started a little high school football web site that very quickly has grown into a community youth activity site. Between that and doing all the animated graphics for the schools new arena jumbo tron, I've been extremely busy. I've got my Eagle sitting here and pick it up while I'm waiting on a file to render or what not, but no real playing. The Bluegrass guys are in thier off season and I haven't even made one of the Friday nighters.

Here's the address
http://www.airedalenation.com

I'm in the process of a complete face lift. I've got 49 clubs and organizations wanting representation on the site and I am trying to figure out a script were I can use images in a drop down menu to link to them from. I'm not a big fan of the same old same old text menus plus I love a challenge. Laughing

Wow, so much new stuff going on around here since I've left! I can't wait for some of these new ideas to start coming into play. I think the user posted lessons idea is awesome Mike, I know I'd definitely like to contribute some lessons from time to time! I've loved this site since it first started but now it's so much better! Keep up the good work bro. Cool

YES - I'm totally pumped too.

I really hope you do help out with the content. I think once you see what I created you will get a kick out of it. Basicilly just about everything you could ask for in a lesson creator is available though the system. But more about that later...

I'm about a 2-3 weeks from the release hopefully. Been making great progress but still have a bunch of work so don't be mad if 3 weeks turns into 5 but I can't see it taking that long. I'm done with about 80% of the hard stuff but I still have a bunch of little easy things that have to be done and that may take up most of my time.
